08-12 Ford Escape Transmission… How Reliable Is It Really?

I keep hearing people say that the 2008-2012 Escape is super reliable, but then I hear that the 6F35 transmission isn’t.

I’d love to buy a used Escape, but all the complaints about the 6F35 have me worried. Are these issues more common in 2013+ models, or should I be concerned about the earlier years too?

Also, is the 3.0 V6 more reliable than the 4-cylinder?

What years should I be looking for if I want the most reliable version?

The ones that fail usually come down to factory defects, bad rebuilds, or poor maintenance by the previous owner.

I had a 2010 Escape, and when I first got it at 130k miles, the transmission had barely any fluid left. It was a little jerky when coming to a hard stop, but I changed the fluid around 180-190k miles (first time it was ever serviced according to records), and it ran perfect after that.

Made it to 234k miles before getting totaled while Doordashing.

The 3.0 V6 is a solid engine (just not great on gas). If you’re looking at the 6F35 transmission, try to find one that doesn’t have a trailer hitch—you never know what kind of ridiculous weight the previous owner tried towing with it.

If you need a hitch, just install one later.

It’s not the best transmission Ford ever made, but it’s fine if you keep up with maintenance.

The 2008 model still has the 4-speed CD4E, not the 6F35.

I personally own:

  • 2008 Escape with the CD4E
  • 2011 Fusion with the 6F35
  • A family member has a second Escape/Mariner with the 2.5L & 6F35

Honestly, the 6F35 is fine—no issues so far. It’s more fuel-efficient, but it shifts a lot more and feels a little weird sometimes. The CD4E, on the other hand, feels more predictable and smoother overall.

I’ve got a 2012 Escape with 118k miles. When I first got it around 100k miles, the transmission was super jerky.

Reset the transmission tables at 105k miles, and it’s been smooth ever since. These transmissions adapt to driving style, so resetting it can make a big difference.

Also, I change my transmission fluid every 30k miles because the 6F35 is ‘sealed’, meaning it doesn’t have a dipstick. You really have to stay on top of fluid changes.

I bought my 2010 Limited in 2018 with 100k km on the clock. Just rolled over 173k km last week.

Other than replacing the water pump and control arms, it’s been solid. If you stay on top of maintenance, the rust will probably kill it before the mechanical parts do.

The transmission fluid is super easy to change yourself, so don’t skip it.

I have a 2012 Escape V6 AWD, and it’s been my best all-around vehicle so far. No transmission issues at 157k miles, and I’ve even done some occasional towing.

I drain and refill the trans fluid every 2-3 years, and that seems to be enough to keep it running strong.

The 3.0 V6 is very reliable. I have a 2012 Escape, and it’s been great.

Bought my 2009 Escape V6 brand new with the 6F35, and it has 215k miles now with no issues.

All I’ve done in those miles is:

  • Regular oil changes
  • Transmission fluid changes every 30k miles
  • Water pump replacement
  • Replaced the battery a couple of times

Even my headlight bulbs lasted until 180k miles. The key to the 6F35 lasting is changing the fluid often and driving it gently (easing off the throttle during shifts helps a lot).

If you’re buying used, it really depends on how the previous owner treated it.
