So here’s the thing. I had to get my battery replaced because the auto start/stop stopped working. We called AAA, and while he was looking at it, I asked about the auto start/stop, and he said I should have it. But I don’t know why it’s not working now… Anyone know how to fix this?

Oops, forgot to mention, it’s a 2017

If you have an SE or higher with the 1.5L or 2.0L, you should have auto start/stop. If your old battery was really bad, it could have disabled the feature. After replacing the battery, you might need to reset the BMS to get it working again. Here’s how I did it on my 2017:
- Turn the key to the ON position (don’t start the car, or press the Start button without the brake)
- Flash the turn signal lever 5 times
- Press the brake pedal 3 times
- After about 10 seconds, the battery light might flash
I didn’t always get the light to flash, but it worked for me. You can also reset it using Forscan if you want.
@Denny
Thanks! I’ll try that

Lol, it’s funny how people pay for me to help them disable stuff. What a strange world.

There are like 20 or so variables the car checks to make sure it can auto stop/start. It’s kind of a hassle for small gains. Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with it and just enjoy the fact that you have a starter that can last a million cycles instead of a few hundred thousand.
@Colby
How can I turn it off permanently on a 2024 model?

I haven’t worked on anything that new, but one of the sensors it checks is the battery’s state of charge. There’s a black connector on the ground of your battery. If the computer can’t see the battery’s charge status, it won’t auto start/stop. This might trigger a CEL though. I’ve seen this mostly with F-150s, where it doesn’t start intermittently due to auto stop/start. You might want to google how to bypass it for your specific car model.
I have a 2017 too… If you see any error messages on your dashboard, auto start won’t work. If it tells you that you need an oil change or tire pressure is low, it won’t work.

Oh, I don’t have any messages, but would it still count if I have a tire pressure warning in my Ford Pass app?
Why would you even want it to work?

Exactly. I prefer mine disabled completely. First thing I do when I get in the car is turn it off.

I’m with you. They say it’s designed to work this way, but I don’t buy it. I’d rather keep my battery and starter engaged just a few times a day instead of 50 times.
@Ellis
I looked into disabling it through FORScan but couldn’t find a way. I asked my dealership if they could do it, and they said no. I heard it can be disabled on the F-150 with a software update, but not for the Escape.

Where I drive, there’s a noticeable difference in gas mileage when it’s on versus off.

Does that difference in gas mileage cover the cost of replacing the battery and starter more often?
@Ellis
Since they put in a bigger battery and starter, I haven’t had to replace them yet. So yes, it seems to cover the cost.

I guess I just want to save on gas, lol.
