Error Code P2196 After Gas Tank Overfilled

I drive a 2020 Ford Escape SEL 2.0L and just hit 60,000 miles this past week. Last night, at the gas station, the pump was filling up really slowly. I thought it was just due to the cold weather and impatiently waited for it to finish. I got a phone call, looked away for a minute, and when I looked back, gas was pouring out of the tank. After dealing with that, my car wouldn’t start. I got an error message that said ‘Manual Restart Required.’ I did that, and it was only able to go into full power accessory mode. After turning it off again, I managed to get the engine on after holding the button and brake for a noticeably longer time. The check engine light came on, and I was able to drive home, but the car was shifting erratically between 1-2 RPMs with no clear pattern.

This morning, I took it to my Ford dealership. The technician told me it’s reading Error Code P2196 Bank 1 Sensor 1. I’m unsure if it’s a bad sensor or a clog—they’ll perform a full diagnosis. However, they said the two incidents were likely unrelated, which I find confusing since I hadn’t experienced any engine issues before the gas tank overflowed. Has anyone else gone through something similar? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! :pray:

Have you tried getting a pump to remove some of the extra gas?

I feel like I have the exact opposite problem with fueling up my 2021 SE EcoBoost. The pumps in my town always shut off unless I pull it out a tad while filling. It’s been lots of clicking and cursing.

Me too, what the heck!

@Andi
Same here. Just don’t push it all the way down. I have the same car.

@Andi
I had the same issue when I first got the car! It was so frustrating for the first few weeks.

@Andi
That’s usually a pump issue, to my knowledge. It doesn’t always happen, but when you need to fill an ambulance with over $200 worth of gas, it’s a nightmare.
