Is the Ford Edge just a bigger Escape?

I was thinking about this earlier… isn’t the Ford Edge basically just a longer and non-compact version of the Escape? Like, same engine and some shared features, right? What do you guys think?

Nope, they’re built on completely different platforms.

My wife has a 2023 Escape ST-Line, and I have a 2019 Edge ST. They’re very different in how they drive and handle. Both great cars, but definitely not the same.

I thought they shared the engine or something like that. Didn’t know they were so different lol.

@Jesse
They share the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, but that’s it. The Edge also has the 2.7L twin-turbo V6 (in the ST) and used to have the 3.5L V6. The Escape has had smaller engines, like the 1.5L EcoBoost and the 2.5L hybrid.

@Blake
Ahh, that makes sense now! I have the 2.0 EcoBoost in mine and thought more parts would overlap, like wiring harnesses and stuff. Guess not!

They don’t share much besides some small stuff, like the power trunk buttons.

Really? I thought they shared the same motor and stuff.

Only the 2.0L EcoBoost is shared. The Edge also had the 3.5L and the 2.7L twin-turbo, which the Escape never got.

@Florian
Got it, thanks for clarifying!

@Florian
Also, the Edge had an 8-speed transmission, while the Escape had a 6-speed (at least up until 2019).

Why am I getting downvoted for asking a genuine question? :sob:

It’s on the edge of being an Escape. :joy:

I replaced my 2017 Escape with a 2019 Edge, and they’re totally different vehicles. The Edge got some updates first, like the 8-speed transmission and EGR cooler (though the cooler can leak). The Escape is smaller but has better storage options, like more usable cubbies and space. Also, the Edge’s sloped rear window makes its cargo space feel less practical for taller items.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison for more details: https://www.kbb.com/compare-cars/results/?vehicleIds=415969|438707.

@Riley
I was comparing the 2020 Edge to the 2020 Escape. I’ve noticed the Edge got some features first. Yeah, the Edge is wider and longer, but I thought they shared a lot more than just the engine. Guess I was wrong!
