Hey everyone! Just picked up a 2009 Ford Escape Limited with the V6 engine. It’s in great shape with 142,000 km, and I’m really excited!
It came safety certified, but since it’s a used car, what additional maintenance should I do right away?
Also, any tips on how to keep it running well and extend its life? I plan to keep it for at least 3-5 years (another 100k km).
Thanks in advance!

Congrats! Here’s what I’d do first:
Fluids: Change all of them. Engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid (drain and fill), transfer case, and rear differential.
Suspension: Set aside money for potential suspension work, and if you notice anything off while driving, have it checked.
Brakes: Inspect the discs, drums, and pads. The drums are probably fine, but make sure the rest are in good shape.
Belts and pulleys: Mine needed a new pulley around 100k km, so listen for any weird noises.
Spark plugs & coils: Can be checked but aren’t urgent unless you notice misfires.
Filters: Replace engine air filter and cabin air filter if they’re dirty.
This should get you started!

Rustproof it! These Escapes are known to rust, so it’s worth the effort.
Also, keep an eye on oil consumption—these engines can start burning oil. Change the oil every 5,000 km and monitor how much it’s using.
Spark plugs can probably wait until 200k km.

We had an ‘08 Escape with the V6 and put 150k km on it with zero issues until the ABS system failed. The replacement part had to be Ford OEM and cost $3,000, so instead of fixing it, we bought a 2010 Escape for $2,500.
Moral of the story: Watch out for the ABS system!
