I’m thinking about buying a used 2020 1.5 engine to replace the one in my 2017 Escape. Does anyone know if it would work or fit?
The 2020 Escape 1.5L engine is totally different from the 2017 model. Even though the displacement is similar, the 2020 version is a three-cylinder engine, while the 2017 uses a four-cylinder. They wouldn’t be directly compatible.

Got it. So when I’m looking for a used engine, is there a specific build date that avoids the coolant intrusion problem?

You’ll need an engine built after April 8th or 9th, 2019. Unfortunately, finding one might be tricky because Ford switched to making the new three-cylinder engines later in 2019 for the 2020 model year.
The 2020 and newer 1.5 engines switched to a three-cylinder design, unlike the four-cylinder engines that had the coolant intrusion issues. I don’t think they’d be compatible for a swap.
