2013 Ford Escape 2.0: Is it worth $9,000?

Looking at a rust-free, AWD Titanium trim 2013 Ford Escape with the 2.0L EcoBoost, 90k miles, for $9,000. I loved my 2008 Escape but sold it due to brake issues. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the turbocharged EcoBoost engines from this era, so I’m hesitant. This would be for my wife. Any thoughts? Also open to sub-$15k SUV recommendations or better Escape model years.

I own a 2014 SE 2.0L and did my research. The 2013-2016 2.0L is somewhat reliable compared to other EcoBoost engines of that time. However, early models ('13-'14) had issues with PTOs, transmissions, and rear differentials. The claim of ‘lifetime fluid’ is nonsense; maintenance is key. I’ve had some issues with the rear camera and blower motor but nothing too crazy. Still, an 11-year-old car is a gamble regardless of the brand.

The 2.0L EcoBoost from 2013-2016 can have coolant intrusion issues. If the transmission hasn’t been serviced, it’s prone to failure between 80k-120k miles. Turbo failures around 100k-120k are also not uncommon. I’d avoid it.

I had a 2013 Escape. It’s a no from me. Too many issues.

My 2013 Titanium AWD 2.0 has 130k miles and has been trouble-free. It’s been a great car for me.

I have one with 60k miles. My wife likes it, but I find it cramped (I’m 6’4"). Had to replace a strut and had minor AC issues, but otherwise, it’s been okay. Maintenance can be annoying, like replacing the battery.

I drove my 2013 2.0L EcoBoost to 360,000 km (224k miles) before the transmission gave out. The engine itself was solid, but I maintained it religiously. If you buy it, change all the fluids immediately, and be prepared for repairs.

My 2013 SEL 2.0T’s engine blew up at 130k miles due to coolant intrusion. Avoid it.

Coolant intrusion is a real risk. It’s a gamble on whether you get a good engine or not. I’d pass.

I have a 2013 with 138k miles and love it. Minor issues here and there, but the handling and power are great. I plan to drive it until a major repair isn’t worth it anymore.

I bought a 2013 2.0 AWD with 190k miles in 2021, now at 270k and still going strong. Changed fluids regularly, no coolant or rear differential issues so far. It’s a roll of the dice, but I’ve had good luck.

I have a 2014 AWD Titanium with the 2.0, 82k miles, no drivetrain issues. If you buy it, immediately change all fluids (transmission, PTU, rear diff). Lack of fluid maintenance is a major cause of failures.

While the 1.5L and 1.6L had worse coolant intrusion issues, the 2.0L isn’t immune. Get a Carfax and ask for an ‘OASIS’ report from a Ford dealer for a detailed service history. Be wary of recalls, especially the door latch and shifter cable bushing.

Why even consider this in 2024? Move on to something better.
