2014 Ford Escape Titanium… strange idle and shuddering?

My Escape has around 116,000 miles, and lately, I’ve noticed a faint shudder or slight surge when I’m stopped at red lights. It’s subtle but feels like the engine is skipping. No check engine light or error codes are coming up.

I changed the spark plugs and engine filter at 100,000 miles and do oil changes every 3,000 miles. I’m wondering if it could be fuel injectors or something else but don’t know where to start.

Any advice would be really helpful!

Have you ever had the intake valves cleaned?

Not that I know of! I checked my service records, and I don’t see it done. Is this something I could tackle with some YouTube videos?

@Lane
It’s a bit challenging. The best method is removing the intake and using walnut blasting to clean the valves, but you have to be really careful not to let debris get into the cylinders.

There are spray cleaners, but I don’t fully trust them. They’re not super effective if there’s heavy buildup, and there’s a risk of dislodged particles passing through the engine, which could harm the turbo or other parts.

Does it seem to happen right after you fill up with gas?

Not every time, but now that you mention it, the worst shudder I felt was right after I filled up.
