Owners of 2021 Ford Escape hybrids… How is your vehicle handling the recall for the under hood fire risk? Has the fix been effective for you? Was the repair a simple or more extensive fix?
I test drove a 2021 Ford Escape Titanium AWD last weekend, but after reading about this lawsuit, I’m having second thoughts about whether it’s a safe purchase. The car has 140,000 km and is priced at $26,000 (including taxes). Could this be another Pinto situation?
That’s a steep price. I think you’re in Canada, but a friend of mine here in Indiana got a 2020 Titanium 2.0L AWD with 34,000 miles for $22,000 OTD, and it came with every option.
I have a 2021 Ford Escape Titanium Hybrid, and I’m happy with what they’ve done for the recall. This issue was specifically with the hybrid models, and I remember that the hybrid wasn’t available in AWD in 2021, though I could be wrong. If you have the VIN, you can check whether all the recalls were handled here: Check for Recalls: Vehicle, Car Seat, Tire, Equipment | NHTSA. For the hybrid models, the fix involved making sure oil wouldn’t pool in the engine compartment in case of an engine blowout to prevent a fire, and another was a software update. I was never told to stop driving the car. One source mentioned that if it made it past the first oil change, the car was okay.

Interesting about the oil change. I thought it affected more Ford models, like the Mavericks and Lincoln Corsairs?
You’re right, it also affected the Lincoln Corsair. The Corsair, along with the Maverick, shares the same platform as the Escape, and their hybrids use the same 2.5L engine. The Navigator, on the other hand, is a full-size SUV, more like the luxury version of the Ford Expedition. I really hope that oil change information is true. My Escape has 14,000 miles and is about to get its third oil change.
