How soon should I change the oil? Is it urgent?

2014 ford escape 1.6L ecoboost turbo 174K miles. Transmission replaced at 145K

Doing some suspension work on my gf’s escape (LCA, ball joints, struts, etc), when OOPS! accidentally pull out the passenger CV axle. I knew there was a leak somewhere but didn’t realize how comprehensive it was.

Photo 1-3: There’s all over by the trans. Only passenger side; drivers side is clean. THIS WAS ALREADY THERE prior to pulling out the axle. Not a drop of trans fluid fell when the axle came out. Maybe because it’s jacked up and not level, but I’m assuming now the trans fluid is way low. I haven’t noticed any issues with the transmission tho; no hard shifting or serious spikes in the RPM but also haven’t been driving much since the suspension is shot.

Photo 4: this is a ground stain I saw today after the car had been sitting 3 days. I had noticed last week a small spot on the ground, which clued me into the fact there was a leak somewhere. But this today was much much larger

Photo 5: The whole underside. You can see the trans on the right and some stains on the oil pan. But also oil to the left of the photo

Photo 6-7: there is definitely also oil leaking somewhere on the passenger side of the engine around the belt somewhere

Questions:

  1. Is this all related?
  2. Coincidentally an oil leak and trans leak? If so what should i do?
  3. Was the CV axle not seated properly (photo 2)?
  4. Head gasket failure is common I’ve heard with the ecoboost but no white smoke, no oil-coolant mix. Oil coming from somewhere else?

Oh and top it all off, she’s had a slow coolant leak for at least two years lol after sitting for a week I went out to check and the reservoir was almost empty. It’s coming down near the trans (you can see a little orange dot in photo 1) as well as on the far passenger side

Ford’s oil life system doesn’t just rely on miles; it also considers things like engine temperature, time spent running, and driving style. If it’s showing the message now, it’s either because the system decided it’s time or the light wasn’t reset last time. Personally, I stick to 5,500–6,500 miles with full synthetic.

Looks like whoever changed your oil last forgot to reset the service light.

Exactly. On some models, you can reset it yourself by pressing two buttons. It’s handy if the tech forgets to do it.

Put the key in the ON position but don’t start it. Then hold the brake and gas pedals all the way down. The reset will start and finish on its own if you keep holding them.

I have push-to-start. Does that mean I press the button without touching the brake? I’ll probably leave it alone so the shop can handle it.

Yep, just press the button without stepping on the brake, then do the brake-and-gas thing.

I only drive 3–5k miles a year and get my oil changed annually. The message comes up randomly, so I just reset it and keep track myself.

I wish I could do that. I’ve already put 20k miles on mine since I got it last February.

Wow, you must drive a lot. That’s a ton of miles in one year!

Don’t trust the car’s computer too much. Always write down the mileage when you get the oil changed and check it regularly between services. Engines can burn oil even if they’re new, so keep an eye on the dipstick.

What kind of oil are you using? Full synthetic can handle 5k miles easily in a daily driver. If the dipstick shows some translucency, you’re probably fine until Friday. Likely, your oil life counter wasn’t reset last time.

I haven’t checked the dipstick yet. Got the message on my way to work and didn’t have time to look.

You’re good for now. The red oil light on the dash is when it’s serious.

I’ve seen the same thing happen. I usually change mine at 15,000 kilometers and book the service when I see the reminder. Planning to get mine done in the next couple of weeks.

Just get the oil changed. It doesn’t need to be today, but get it done on your next day off.

I will. Switched shifts so I can do it tomorrow. Got a chip in my windshield and need to wait for Safelite today.

Your car’s oil life monitor is accurate enough for a few hundred miles. Check your owner’s manual for more info.
