Looking for Advice on Buying a 2010 Escape XLT 2WD, Good Deal?

So, in this market (is it starting to calm down finally?), I’m on the hunt for a budget-friendly, compact SUV, ideally a 4-cylinder. Found a 2010 Ford Escape XLT, front-wheel drive with 105k miles, listed at $5k.

It’s had only one owner after being a dealership loaner car, clean title, a few cosmetic dings, but it has new tires and a new catalytic converter.

What do you guys think about the price and the car itself? Any specific things I should check when I see it in person? I’ve never owned a Ford before. Thanks for any help!

I’m usually cautious about buying ex-loaner cars, though they’re probably better than ex-rentals. Where I am, you could probably find a 4WD V6 version of the same model for about the same price (if you’re open to looking on Marketplace). The 4-cylinder might feel a bit underpowered, but if you’re just using it for city driving, it should be fine.

In terms of the Escape itself, they’re solid! My family has had two, both first and second gen, and they’re versatile with a lot of aftermarket options. Great for light dirt roads and snow, while still being easy to handle in the city. Check for oil leaks, especially with the V6 engines, but overall they’re surprisingly roomy for their size.

I picked up a 2011 XLS 2.5L with 95k miles for $6995. I added factory fog lights, switched to LED bulbs, fixed an AC leak, and got new tint. It was a little dirty inside, but it cleaned up well. Runs great now! Mainly got it so my elderly mom could get in and out easily instead of struggling with my lifted truck. Just wanted to share my experience!

We had a 2010 XLT FWD with the 3.0L that we ran up to 230k miles. It was an awesome car for my wife. Handled daily driving and rain well, though snow driving was a bit rough. Keep an eye on tires, belts, battery, and water pump—those were the only issues we had. Good luck! With regular maintenance, it should serve you well.
